Christopher Columbus Day: A Journey of Faith and Courage
Today we celebrate Christopher Columbus Day, a moment not only of history — but of faith. Too often, the spiritual heart of Columbus’s journey is forgotten. Columbus was a man deeply formed by his Catholic faith, prayer, and devotion to Our Lord and Our Lady.
He believed his voyage across the ocean was a mission from God. In his own journals, Columbus wrote that the Holy Spirit inspired his desire to bring the Gospel to new lands. He prayed the Divine Office daily, and his ship the Santa María carried not only supplies — but the Blessed Name of Mary, under whose protection he sailed.
Upon landing in the New World, Columbus and his men knelt and prayed, giving thanks to God and dedicating the new land to Christ. His first act was not to claim glory for himself, but to lift his eyes to Heaven.
For many Italian immigrants, Columbus became a symbol of faith and perseverance — a reminder that with God’s guidance, even the impossible can be achieved.
As the daughter of an Italian immigrant, this day fills me with pride and gratitude. My father, like Columbus, set out on his own journey of courage — leaving behind the familiar, trusting that God would open new doors for his family in America. His hard work, devotion, and faith built a foundation of hope for future generations.
Columbus Day is more than a moment in history — it is a celebration of faith, family, and divine providence. May we never forget the Catholic roots of our heritage and the brave souls who placed their trust in God’s will above all else.
