Theotokos- God-bearer

Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

On the first day of the year, the Church gives us Mary.

Not as a sentimental figure, but as a profound theological truth:

the woman who bore God Himself.

When we call Mary Mother of God, we are proclaiming something essential about Christ — that He is fully God and fully man, from the very moment of His conception.

Mary’s role is not incidental to salvation history. Her yes opened the door for the Incarnation. Through her obedience, God entered time, flesh, and human history.

In beginning the year with Mary, the Church teaches us how to walk forward:

  • not with self-reliance,
  • not with anxiety,
  • but with trustful surrender to God’s plan.

Mary teaches us to receive Christ and to carry Him into the world.

As this year unfolds, may we echo her words:

“Let it be done to me according to your word.”

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.

God bless you in this new year!
