Let the Little Ones Come to Me

As a Catholic high school Theology teacher, the tragedy that unfolded today at Annunciation Catholic Church strikes deeply at my heart. An evil-doer—an author of hate and death—unleashed his wrath during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, while children were gathered in prayer. For Catholics, the Mass is the highest form of worship, a sacred encounter with God. It is meant to be a sanctuary of safety, holiness, and peace. Yet today, that sacred space was desecrated by the shedding of innocent blood at the hands of a man consumed by darkness.

The thought that two young children were killed while praying in their pews is almost impossible to comprehend. Make no mistake—this was an unspeakable act of evil, a direct assault on the Body of Christ and the Roman Catholic Church.

With profound grief, our hearts ache for the little souls taken from this world and for their families, now shattered by unimaginable loss. Countless passages of Scripture flood my mind, but the words of Jesus in Matthew 19 pierce my heart most deeply: “Let the little children come to me, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14). I can only pray that these innocent ones—who met martyrdom in a way none could have imagined—are now embraced in the loving arms of Jesus.

In these moments of darkness, our hearts cry out in anguish. As we struggle to find peace and understanding, I humbly ask all who read this to pray for the souls who have departed, for the families and loved ones who will endure unimaginable suffering, and for all who have been wounded by this act of hatred. Through the Sacred Heart of Jesus, scourged and nailed to the Cross, may divine mercy be poured out upon the departed. May Our Lady, who stood at the foot of the Cross of her Son, intercede for us all. Let us unite our hearts with Christ, the King of Kings, and with His Blessed Mother, the Queen of Heaven and Earth, as we walk together through this valley of sorrow.

With rosary beads in hand, let us pray:

Heavenly Father, welcome these little ones into the embrace of Your infinite mercy. Comfort their families with Your peace and strengthen all who grieve with Your grace. Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may Your mercy bring healing to our broken hearts.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.

Amen.
